Monuments

No doubt we have to talk about some interesting monuments of León, for instance: The Cathedral, a gothic temple in honor of Santa María what it was built in 13th century. It was inspirited on the French cathedral and it has three naves, with gothic vaults. The particular trait is that the towers are separated from the main structure.

San Isidoro Basilic is one of the most important temple in romanic style. Its royal pantheon paintings are the Sistine chapel of the romanic. The King Fernando I and his wife Doña Sancha made the donation to support the built of San Juan Bautista Monastery. When the bishop of Seville San Isidoro died, his body was buried on the temple.

San Marcos Convent was built with the support of the catholic King and Queen near the ancient bridge of San Marcos, bridge for the pilgrims to cross the Bernesga river. The convent was before a prison, where there was put on cage celebrate people like Francisco Quevedo. Then it was the seat of the first veterinary faculty and even in the civil war it was a refugee camp. Nowadays, it´s a luxury hotel.

Musac is the contemporary museum of art of Castile and León. It was designed by the architec study Tuñon and Mansilla and it won the Mies Van der Roe architecture award on 2007. The front of the building was inspired on the cathedral stained glass windows: el halconero.

ESPICHAS

"Espichas" are the most popular thing in the university world. Every faculty choose the day when they are going to celebrate their "Espichas". For example, we are studying teacher training and our day is the 26th of November.
This day we prepare a big party and we don`t have lesson during all the day so we built a big marquee where you cand find music, food and drink like beer, "calimocho" (wine with coke) and more things.
"Espichas" begin at 12:00 more or less and end about 00:00 and people of all campus come to have a good time. Moreover, you have grass around and if you want you can eat and sleep a "siesta" there.
When "espichas" finish, people go house to have a shower and to dress and make-up and later they go to the "Humedo" to continue party.
In the "Humedo" people go to different bars and pubs and when they are tired, they go home and for them, the "espicha" has finished.

GOOD CUSTOMS: "SIESTA"

First of all, we want to say that "siesta" is not only a custom of León. All Spain is characterized by "siesta".
When people have finished eating, most of them lie down on the sofa (generally) and sleep for a time (more or less like to have a nap). There are people whose "siesta" last one-two hours but experts recommend about 30 minutes of "siesta".
It is fantastic (if you have time) because it is a free moment in the day to have a break and later you are more active to finish the day.

TAPAS

Perhaps "tapas" is the most charasterist of León. Most of people who come to our city are surprised when they see "tapas". First of all we are going to localize the most typical areas where you can go to "tapear".

There are a variety of areas for "tapear": "El Corte Inglés", "Burgo Nuevo", "Eras de Renueva" and, of course, "El Húmedo".

El Húmedo is situated in the centre of León, next to the cathedral, and there you can find a lot of taverns, old-style bars and typical restaurants. Each bar offers "tapas" distinct. They are typical the ones of morcilla and soups of garlic. "El Húmedo" is the neighbourhood by excellence in our city. In it finds 75% of the bars of "tapas" and 90% of the nocturnal pubs. There is environment all the days of the week, specially the weekends.
What are "tapas"?
When you go to a bar from 12:00 to 15:00 and from 19:00 to 00:00 (approximately), and you ask for a drink, the bar gives you a piece of food (for example potatoe omellete, a piece of serrano jam, cheese, or something typical of León) without pay any money for that. You only have to pay for the drink.
Sometimes, if you don´t want to make the lunch or dinner you could go to "tapear" that consists on going to different bars and ask for some drinks and since they give you some food, you may eat.
People when go to "tapear", usually ask for "cortos". "Cortos" are a small glass of wine, beer or whatever and it doesn´t much money so "tapear" is really cheap.
